영국의 안과 의사이자 소설가이다. 1859년 영국 스코틀랜드 에든버러에서 태어났다. 1876년 에든버러 대학교에서 들어가 의학을 공부했다. 학생 시절 고전문학과 가보리오, 에드거 앨런 포 등의 접하였으며, 자신이 쓴 단편 소설을 <에든버러 저널>에 처음으로 발표했다. 1882년 포츠머스 사우스시 지역에서 안과를 개업하며 안과 의사로 활동한다. 그는 환자를 진료하는 한편 꾸준히 글을 쓰고 투고하는 생활을 했다. 1887년 첫 번째 셜록 홈즈 시리즈인 《주홍색 연구A Study in Scarlet》를 <비튼의 크리스마스 연감>에 발표했다. 이후 《네 사람의 서명The Sign of Four》 (1890년), 《셜록 홈즈의 모험The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes》 (1892년), 《셜록 홈즈의 회상록The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes》 (1894년), 《바스커빌 가문의 개The Hound of the Baskervilles》 (1902년), 《셜록 홈즈의 귀환The Return of Sherlock Holmes》 (1904년), 《공포의 계곡The Valley of Fear》 (1914년), 《마지막 인사His Last Bow》 (1917년), 《셜록 홈즈의 사건집The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes》 (1927년) 등 세계적으로 인기를 끈 셜록 홈즈 시리즈를 써냈다. 1912년에는 소설 《쥐라기 공원》의 원본 격인 《잃어버린 세계The lost world》를 저술하기도 했다.
